How do you clean and disinfect a water tank?

Do not drink from the tank if the water is cloudy, smells, or has an insect in it. Empty the tank, wash it, and rinse it. A closed ground tank is a job for a cleaning crew.

Why does the tank need cleaning?

Dust and heat leave sediment on the wall and the floor. Over time that becomes a smell, a colour, or insects, and it reaches the taps even when the water source is clean. Cleaning the tank is not the same as clearing a drain: the drain carries used water away, and the tank stores the water you drink.

What should you do if the water is cloudy or an insect appears?

  • • Stop drinking and cooking from this tank until the clean is finished.
  • • Do not add chlorine or a random chemical on top of the water that is already in it.
  • • Empty the tank if you can do that safely, without climbing inside.
  • • Do not open the hatch of a closed ground tank except for a crew with ventilation and equipment.
  • • After washing, rinse more than once before refilling, and do not drink the first run if a smell remains.

How often, and when should you not wait for the date?

The usual interval is six months, and sooner after dust, building work, or a change in taste. If the smell is only at the kitchen sink and the rest of the house is normal, the drain may be the cause rather than the tank: read how to clear a kitchen drain. The price before the crew arrives is in how to estimate a maintenance cost.

How often should a water tank be cleaned?

In homes, usually every six months, and sooner after a dust storm, building work, or a change in the taste or colour of the water.

Can I clean the tank myself?

A small rooftop tank that you can reach safely can be emptied, wiped, and rinsed well. Leave a closed ground tank to a crew. Climbing into it is dangerous, and the air inside is poor.

Does an insect in the tank mean the water is unsafe?

Yes. Stop drinking and cooking with that water until the tank is emptied, washed, and rinsed. Removing the insect is not enough.
